Death of Alex Freeman
6th July 2018
We are sorry to announce the death of Alex Freeman on 1 July 2018.
Alexander was born on the 10 May 1932. At Stanborough School his teachers called him Alec because there were two Alexanders in the class. After finishing his secondary schooling at Watford Grammar School, Alex enrolled at Newbold College. He graduated in June 1954 and commenced employment as a Ministerial Intern variously deployed in Bristol and Bath, followed by Brighton and Worthing. As a Licensed minister Alex served the Edmonton and then the Oxford congregations and in 1957 married Vivien Batten. Together they had three children Deborah, Melvyn and Col
In 1958, Alex was called to lead the Publishing Department at the SEC and served as Publishing Secretary through to 1962 in which year he was ordained as a minister. Following his ordination, Alex was called to serve the NEC as Publishing Department Secretary.
In 1963, Alex was called to serve the Edinburgh Congregation which he did until September 1965 when he returned to Newbold, on leave of absence, to complete a Newbold BA in 1966, after which he enrolled at Andrews University and graduated with an MA in 1971.
On returning to the UK, there was no pastoral opening and Alex, encouraged and supported by John Woodfield, undertook teacher training. He then taught Religious Education for a number of years in Berkshire and Somerset.
Following back problems Alex took early retirement and relocated to the Minehead area where he got involved with handbell ringing, initially as a hobby, but this developed into a passion in his life. Over the subsequent years, he set up a number of hand- bell ringing groups in Somerset and later in South Wales. It was while living in Tenby that Alex started to attend the Carmarthen Church where he met Valerie Dust (formerly Munson, nee Baldwin), whom he had first met at Newbold in the 1950’s. Alex and Val married in 2009 and later relocated to Burnham-on-Sea to be closer to his grandchildren. Alex unfortunately developed cancer in 2016 but continued an active life until just a few months ago.
