Death of Mrs Barbara Margerison

19th July 2018

We are saddened to announce the death of Barbara Margerison (widow of Ivor Margerison, former Headteacher at Stanborough School 1984-93) who fell asleep in Jesus, the evening of 15 July.

Barbara Savage was born in Cardiff on 2 April 1927. After completing elementary school, Barbara attended Newbold College where she completed the secretarial course. On 1 July 1951 she married Ivor Margerison who had also been born and grew up in Cardiff. Ivor had completed his Higher School certificate in Science and achieved a London University Intermediate Arts certificate and a Newbold Teacher's Diploma.

After their marriage Ivor joined the staff at Stanborough School in January 1952, where he taught Maths and Science, and continued there until the autumn of 1954. In November 1953 Barbara entered work as a nursing orderly at the Stanborough Hydro.

The couple left the UK in October 1954 so that Ivor could complete a BA at Atlantic Union College. From September 1955 to August 1959 Ivor worked in the Culver School, Rochester as a teacher and then at the Greater New York Academy until August 1961. He was later to complete an MA at Columbia University in 1964 and a Diploma in Secondary Maths from the Cambridge Institute of Education in 1972. During their time in New York Barbara worked in the Transportation office of the local Conference, served as a deaconess, in the Dorcas society and as a leader in Children's Sabbath School in their local church.

In August 1984 Ivor took up the post of Headteacher at Stanborough Secondary School, a position he held until retirement in 1993. During this time Barbara managed the laundry services of the boarding school and also took in children and young people who had difficulties being away from home. Barbara was a big supporter of ADRA-UK and STOP International.

Not long after the couple moved to a new home in Watford, Ivor died on 14 March 2000. After moving to a smaller home in 2002 Barbara continued to be an active member of the Stanborough Park church until her own health required her to move to a care home in Binfield nearer to her daughter Heather.

After a slow decline in health Barbara died peacefully on Sunday 15 July. Our condolences and prayer are extended to her children, son-in-law, grandchildren and all those who loved her.

The funeral will take place on Monday 6 August at 12 noon at the Stanborough Park Church.

Donations in lieu of flowers to the Student Aid Fund Stanborough School.
