The Evangelism and Church Growth Symposium 2018
7th September 2018
The Evangelism and Church Growth Symposium, hosted by Pastor Mark Finley and his wife Ernestine at Newbold College of Higher Education, was well-received by the participants who came from around the UK and Europe held from 18-24 August.
Pastor Finley drew inspiration from the Bible highlighting key components of growth in the early Church. "We have been seriously studying the book of Acts, noting that the 1st Century is not that much different from the 21stCentury. Roman society was a materialistic, sports-mad, pleasure-seeking society. It was an anti-Christian society and yet the Spirit of God worked among the people and the church grew", said Pastor Finley.
"So, we have been emphasising prayer, the Holy Spirit and the Word of God and giving strong emphasis to the fact that church growth is largely a spiritual work. In John chapter 4, Jesus' disciples only saw resistance to the Gospel in Samaria, but Jesus said 'the harvest is plentiful', so in Europe, the harvest is plentiful! We may not see it, but God is working and we want our churches to have a mindset for growth", Finley continued.
This was the first of three Evangelism and Church Growth Symposium programmes. Subsequent programmes will take place at Newbold in the summers of 2019 and 2020.
"There will be refreshers for people that have attended the first programme. I would like pastors to bring their lay people for the next seminar. We can have pastors and lay people together having a dialogue.
"We are going to expand on what we have done here, talk about how a local church can do comprehensive evangelism and how it can reach the needs of people and its community with a variety of health, biblical, social and family life programmes", said Finley.
