BEAR COMFORT FOR DEMENTIA

27th April 2018

Meet Elder Doreen – teddy bear maker and Elder Margaret who delivers them whilst she visits hospital and care-home patients. They are from East Kilbride in the west of Scotland. Many of the patients that Margaret visits suffer from dementia. The bears are extremely soft and tactile, which is very good for dementia patients, in particular, to cuddle.

When Margaret's late husband, Bill, was in hospital she noticed that a number of patients got few visitors. Elder Margaret takes juice and chocolate buttons to several patients each week after checking first with the nurses so that diabetics can be given something else. Visiting the hospital has been good for her too as it gives her less time to be on her own. Both Elders Margaret and Doreen are 80 this year.
